Respected Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, launched the Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (Bharat NCAP) on Tuesday, August 22. This plan, which is set to come into effect on October 1, 2023, intends to improve automotive safety standards in India by focusing on cars weighing up to 3.5 tonnes.
Nitin Gadkari, speaking at the inaugural event, stated that the Bharat NCAP will be critical in making India’s automobile industry “aatmanirbhar.” The Bharat NCAP programme automotive safety standard is consistent with the government’s goal of making safer cars in India.
In Bharat NCAP crash test Cars will be awarded from one to five stars based on three criteria: adult occupant protection, child occupant protection, and the presence of safety aid technology. The first two parameters will be calculated using three different types of tests, including a frontal offset test in which a vehicle is driven at 64 kmph with 40% overlap into a deformable barrier that represents the oncoming vehicle, simulating a crash test between two cars of the same weight. Other tests include the 50-kmph side impact test and the 29-kmph pole-side impact test (in which a car collides with a rigid pole sideways).
The objective of the programme is to assist consumers make informed choices before purchasing a car, hence increasing demand for safer vehicles. With only 1% of the world’s automobiles, India has about 1.5 lakh road fatalities every year, accounting for 10% of all road fatalities worldwide
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) recently announced that a total of 30 cars have been shortlisted/received for crash rating; however, which cars will receive the Bharat NCAP (BNCAP) safety rating first has to be determined. At present, the BNCAP test is voluntary for automakers and will be implemented on October 1.
A Recent survey has emerged that out of 12,240 responses, massive 72% of respondents say that they will prefer to BNCAP safety rating of a car when making their buying decision.
